Alaska Auto Transportation ServicesAre you interested in Alaska auto transportation services? Be warned – they’re not for the faint of heart! Okay, that’s not quite true; shipping a car to Alaska really isn’t all that bad. It’s just long, and time consuming, and also kind of expensive. The biggest reason for this is the fact that Alaska is pretty far away, and not all that easy to get to for a lot of car shipping companies. This is because it actually isn’t a part of the contiguous U.S.; rather, it sits northwest of Canada, which makes it hard to get to. Carriers can’t just drive through Canada without spending a ton of money, so most shipments to Alaska have to go another way – overseas!

Alaska Auto Transportation Information

Shipping a car to Alaska is a pretty time-consuming process, all things considered. And it’s because there’s more to it than just picking the car up and moving it. This is because Alaska auto shipping services have to go overseas to actually get the car to Alaska. So you have to understand the process that goes with that.

To start, you have to find a shipping company that ships to Alaska (hey, we ship to Alaska!). Once you book your order, though, is when the real fun begins. And by “fun,” we mean “wait.” Because you’re going to be doing a lot of waiting. So you book your order, and then the shipping company (us) will find a local interstate carrier to ship your car to the port. Which port on the west coast they ship it to will depend on where you’re coming from, but most shipments to Alaska will go out of the port of either Seattle or Tacoma, Washington. Once your car is at the port, it will be loaded onto an overseas cargo ship and actually shipped overseas to the port in Alaska.

That’s where the majority of the cost comes in. You’ll have to pay the carrier to ship it to the port, and also pay the overseas shipper to ship it to the port in Alaska. And you’ll also need to pay the broker (us) that actually handles all that paperwork and legwork. This entire process will take upwards of two weeks or more, depending on where you’re shipping from and the time of year. So keep that in mind.

About Popular Alaska Auto Transportation Locations

Unlike most U.S. states, popular shipping locations in Alaska tend to be the ports. This is because there aren’t all that many companies that ship cars around Alaska; it’s too big, too wild and, in the winter, too dangerous. So most car shippers that do ship to Alaska are going to stop at the port and let you pick it up yourself. There are several ports you can ship to, starting with…

Anchorage

Anchorage is probably the most popular shipping location in Alaska, and definitely the cheapest. It’s one of Alaska’s main ports (though far from the only one) and is where the vast majority of shipments up to Alaska go.

Fairbanks

Fairbanks is a lot harder to ship to than Anchorage or Juneau, but it’s still up there in terms of popular shipping locations in Alaska. Talk to an agent about the increased cost to ship to Fairbanks, as it will cost more than Anchorage.

Juneau

Most people shipping to Juneau don’t like the price, but it’s usually comparable to shipping to Anchorage. At least, depending on where you’re shipping from. The upside to shipping to Juneau is the fact that it’s closer to the port in Seattle than just about any other anchorhead, but at the same time, it’s kind of hard to get to thanks to the islands and straits that surround it.

Miscellaneous

There are many other ports in Alaska that shippers can get to, but overseas carriers may have to work with local car haulers to get them there. Talk to an agent about other ports in Alaska.

Testimonials

  • "Being a rather large SUV that needed shipped from California to Nebraska, there were a few challenges. The first truck that arrived refused to pickup the vehicle due to it's size. However, Mike worked diligently and within one week he had a hotshot lined up. The operators of the hotshot were incredibly communicative and accommodating. The vehicle arrived withing 3 days with no damage at all. Although there was the one hiccup, in the end the service received was top notch. I would be happy to ship with Mike in the future." - Miles/California
