Montana auto transportation services are a tricky thing to talk about. It’s not that you can’t ship a vehicle there – quite the opposite, in fact. Montana is a growing part of the Rocky Mountain and western U.S. states, but it’s still pretty rural. It’s Big Sky country – Montana is known for its rolling hills and mountainous areas and huge swaths of farmland. It’s a rancher’s dream, like Wyoming and the Plains states – but that doesn’t mean it’s an auto shipper’s dream. Montana, as a matter of fact, is one of the more difficult states to ship from and to, and we’ll talk about why below.
Quick Facts About Montana
Population: 1.04 million
Largest City: Billings
Largest Metro Area: Billings Metro
Governor: Steve Bullock
Some Information About Montana Auto Transportation
The main reasons why Montana auto transportation services aren’t all that popular are because customers don’t ship there often and it’s really out of the way for carriers. Auto shippers make their money by getting from one delivery to another quickly. The faster they can get from one drop off location to another, the more money they’ll make in a shorter amount of time. With Montana transportation services, though, this gets trickier. There aren’t many customers going to or from the state despite its growth. Those that are going are going to see longer wait times for dispatch and pickup and often at higher prices.
Why? Because there aren’t any major cities in the state, really. You have Billings, which is the only city in Montana with over 100,000 residents (and barely, at that). Note too that there aren’t really any major metropolitan areas – you have cities that are fairly isolated from one another in Montana. Also, there aren’t any other major cities nearby as well, which hinders the ability of carriers to lower prices for their customers because they have to spend more to run routes through the state. As such, longer wait times and higher prices are common. It’s not impossible to ship to Montana, it’s just usually going to take longer, so keep that in mind when you’re getting quotes for shipping services.
About Popular Montana Auto Transportation Locations
Billings is easily the most popular city in Montana to ship a car, mostly because of its size. Ease of access is important, too; it’s where I-90 and I-94 meet up. So there’s two pretty big interstates that flow into Billings, which helps keep prices a bit lower. But it’s still Montana, and still the middle of nowhere, which is still going to impact your prices.
Simply put, Missoula is a pain to ship to. It’s located in the mountains of western Montana, on the route into Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. This is not a popular route. Outside of the Great Lakes cities further east, the only real major city is Seattle, west of those mountains Missoula sits in. This is a long way to go for not a lot of cash, so carriers have to up prices over the average in order to justify shipping into or out of Missoula.
Great Falls sits north of Butte, which sits at the intersection of I-90 and I-15. This is actually pretty good for Butte because both of those interstates see a decent amount of traffic…but not in far-northern Montana, and Great Falls being even further north cause prices to raise drastically. Talk to an agent about possibly saving some money by moving your pickup or delivery location to somewhere a bit easier to get to. It may not be possible, but it’s worth a shot if you’re shipping on a budget.

- "Being a rather large SUV that needed shipped from California to Nebraska, there were a few challenges. The first truck that arrived refused to pickup the vehicle due to it's size. However, Mike worked diligently and within one week he had a hotshot lined up. The operators of the hotshot were incredibly communicative and accommodating. The vehicle arrived withing 3 days with no damage at all. Although there was the one hiccup, in the end the service received was top notch. I would be happy to ship with Mike in the future." - Miles/California
