Some Information About South Dakota Auto Transportation
If you’re shipping to or from South Dakota, the biggest issue tends to be finding a carrier. Carriers want to go where their customers are, and there aren’t many customers in South Dakota. What this does is it tends to increase the price of your shipment. Carriers have to make up for the additional cost of going out of their way. Most will stick to standard routes along major interstates. This is why routes such as I-5, I-10, and I-95 see so much traffic. They connect the largest cities in the entire nation together.
South Dakota has a couple, too – I-90 and I-29. Of those, both see a modicum of traffic, but not much through the Dakotas. Regardless, carriers will use those routes to get to or from your pickup or delivery location. This means that rural shipments will definitely cost more. If you’re strapped for time, or for cash, move your pickup or delivery location to a bigger city close to the interstate. Sioux Falls and Rapid City come to mind. If you’re not close to either, speak to an agent to discuss your options. They’ll be able to get a truck to you, it just may take some extra time and money.
About Popular South Dakota Auto Transportation Locations
Since South Dakota is pretty sparse, Sioux City is the de facto number one car shipping location as it is the state’s largest city. It’s where the carriers want to go – easy access, high demand (for South Dakota)…it has it all. Outside of Sioux Falls, things get tricky, especially if you’re away from major interstates.
Rapid City is located on the opposite end of South Dakota from Sioux Falls. This is actually kind of nice for carriers, since it also sits on I-80 (as does Sioux Falls). Really, I-90 is the main route carriers will take through the state, and since Rapid City sits right along it, you shouldn’t encounter undue problems.
Despite being the third-largest city by population in the state, no carrier actually wants to go to Aberdeen. It doesn’t sit along any major highways and it’s pretty far removed from other major shipping locations in the state. As such, expect higher problems and longer waits for dispatch and pickup.

- "Being a rather large SUV that needed shipped from California to Nebraska, there were a few challenges. The first truck that arrived refused to pickup the vehicle due to it's size. However, Mike worked diligently and within one week he had a hotshot lined up. The operators of the hotshot were incredibly communicative and accommodating. The vehicle arrived withing 3 days with no damage at all. Although there was the one hiccup, in the end the service received was top notch. I would be happy to ship with Mike in the future." - Miles/California
