It’s a big step – you’re entrusting your car, your precious, your main method of transportation to some random company on the internet. But we also know that you’re likely going to be searching around and comparing prices and services from other companies, because that’s what we’d do in your place. And knowing what to look for – and what to avoid – will make all the difference when it comes to finding the right shipper for you.
How to make your auto transport estimates work for you
Comparing prices is always a good idea no matter what it is you’re looking to buy. But while prices are always good to look at, they’re not the end-all be-all in the car shipping industry. You have to look at the services that those companies provide as well. Do they offer enclosed shipping? Is enclosed shipping something you even need? What about a flatbed – if your vehicle is oversize, it may be necessary, and not all shippers offer flatbed haulers.
Other services to keep an eye out for are guaranteed pickup and delivery windows, which don’t exist. Most companies that “guarantee” services have fine print that says they aren’t actually guaranteed. But this gives you a good idea as to which companies try to pull the wool over customers’ eyes. We’re not saying they’re bad companies, but guaranteed prices and services don’t really exist in this industry. If you still have questions, talk to an agent to learn more.
And this is also why we won’t give you guaranteed pickup or delivery dates – we give out pickup and delivery windows. Because we can’t predict how long it will take the carrier to get from the freeway offramp to your door. We can’t predict traffic, or construction, or anything else that can delay a carrier. We also can’t predict other customers and their interactions with your carrier either. So a guaranteed pickup time or date is just not always feasible. However, most pickup and delivery windows are within 24 hours, so while it may take some time out of your day, at least you’re not going to be expecting a carrier at noon…and then get upset when he doesn’t show until dinnertime.
Always keep your shippers informed
No two shipments are exactly alike. They just aren’t. Differences can be minor, or they can be major, but most auto shipping companies have been around long enough to know that everyone has something different that they need. But sometimes things change, especially between gathering initial quotes and estimates and getting your vehicle picked up.
This is why it’s important to always be up front and honest with your agent right off the bat. Having information such as the dimensions of the vehicle (mostly for oversized vehicles), as well as whether it runs or not or can steer and brake or not, is important. Foregoing those details can lead to underpriced estimates and lead to longer wait times for booking, pickup and delivery.
When you call us for a quote, we’re going to ask you about your vehicle. We’ll discuss what it is you’re shipping and where it’s going and ask questions about both. This way, we get all the information we need to give you a price that is accurate and built to ship your vehicle when you need it shipped. Not all companies do that.
- "Being a rather large SUV that needed shipped from California to Nebraska, there were a few challenges. The first truck that arrived refused to pickup the vehicle due to it's size. However, Mike worked diligently and within one week he had a hotshot lined up. The operators of the hotshot were incredibly communicative and accommodating. The vehicle arrived withing 3 days with no damage at all. Although there was the one hiccup, in the end the service received was top notch. I would be happy to ship with Mike in the future." - Miles/California
