It’s almost always easier – and cheaper – to ship a car to a major city than it is to ship to a small, rural area. But why is car shipping to major cities cheaper than to areas that aren’t big? That’s what we’re going to delve into in today’s post.
Why car shipping to major cities is cheaper
Auto shipping carriers want to travel where their customers are. It’s that simple. Give a carrier a big city with lots of people, and they will almost always fill their trucks faster.
This is important because carriers end up making more money on a route if they can pickup all the vehicles in one area. Not only do they make more money, but they can also offer their services at lower rates per customer.
Think of it this way: two cars are going to City C. One is coming from City A, a small town. One is coming from City B, a big city. City A will usually only have that one vehicle going out of it, while City B will have dozens. If the carrier charger $1,000 to ship a single car out of City A, they only make $1,000 on the route, because they can only pickup one vehicle. But out of City B, they can charge $700 per vehicle, pick up ten cars, and make $7,000 on the route!
Factors that impact your car transport prices
The example in the previous paragraph is only an example. But it holds true, on the whole; carriers make more out of major cities because there’s more customers. Not only that, but they’re also easier to get to.
Interstate highways play an integral role in your auto transportation prices and services. Cities that have interstates running through them – even small ones! – are easier to move freight in and out of. Carriers don’t have to travel as far to get to a customer via the interstates. With state routes, that’s not always the case.
This is especially true for rural areas, though. Those small towns in the middle of nowhere that sit on an interstate will be cheaper than those that don’t. It’s about ease of access.
So the two main factors are really 1) how many people are shipping out of the area, and 2), how easy is it to get to. If the answer is “lots and easy” then your shipment is cheaper and faster. If the answer is “few and hard,” then it’s going to be more expensive and slower.
Auto transport is funny that way.
